Last-Minute Halloween Costumes for Redheads

Talia Wischmann

You were all "I'm not even going to do Halloween this year" but then some jerk invited you to his party and now HOLY CRAP HALLOWEEN IS IN TWO DAYS AND I DON'T HAVE A COSTUME! Not to worry, here are a few options for you my redheaded, poorly planned friend.

1. Peg Bundy (Married With Children)

My god I love Peg Bundy. She's been on my Halloween costume short-list for the past several years but I haven't made it happen yet.

What you'll need:

  • Black leggings
  • Animal print off-shoulder top or leotard
  • Hot rollers
  • Bronzer/highlighter

You may have to make a thrift shop run to find a loud animal print top, but the rest of these supplies you should have on-hand. Set that hair in hot rollers and then tease the living shit out of it. You want it BIG. Like 1987 glam-rock big. Those cheekbones are just as important as the hair. Contouring will be important to get the definition that Peg has. Also very important: shuffle around instead of walking and pop that hip out any time you're standing still.

2. Lucille Ball (I Love Lucy)

Lucille Ball

Heyyy Lucyyy!

What you'll need:

  • Red lipstick
  • Hot rollers
  • Vintage dress

The key here is the hair. You're going to want to set it in small rollers or foam rollers overnight and pin it up. Though her style varied throughout the years, she rocked the "poodle" a lot, which was smooth through the sides and back, and more curled and poufed on top. Here's a great hair tutorial to pull off the classic Lucy.

3. Joan Holloway (Mad Men)

What you'll need:

  • Cigarette
  • Pendant necklace
  • Curve-hugging vintage dress

Joan's signature hairstyle is a loosely-curled beehive, so you'll need to be capable of pulling that off on your own (or quick make an appointment with a friend or salon). Here's a good tutorial to get Joanie's teased beehive.

4. Hipster Ariel

Hipster Ariel is way hotter than regular old Princess Ariel, but maybe too mainstream?

What you'll need:

  • White sheet (we're going for the "Ariel just got her legs" look because you don't have time to shop for seashells and a tail)
  • Rope or twine (you probably have this leftover from some mason jar/burlap craft you were planning last year and never got around to)
  • Your boyfriend's thick rimmed glasses
  • A really cynical/irritated look on your face

Ariel works best for bright-red redheads without bangs or with long bangs. You'll want to do some big, brushed out curls or beachy waves, and a combination of blow-drying and hairspraying to get that Ariel brush-over on the bangs. Then wrap yourself in the sheet (you may want to wear some clothes underneath or pretty underpants at least), tie it up with that twine/rope and throw on your glasses.

5. Quinn Morgendorfer (Daria)

Quinn's look is probably the easiest on this list to pull off.

What you'll need:

  • Pink t-shirt (cropped or cut-off)
  • Flared jeans

Here's a great excuse to pull those flare leg jeans out of the closet and act like a real ditz all night. You may want to add a smiley-face or butterfly patch to the t-shirt to perfect the look but you're under a time crunch so people will probably forgive you. Straighten that hair and then tease it up around the crown - she's got some great volume. Then piece your bangs into little sections with a bit of pomade.

This look would be 1000 times better with a Daria and Jane to accompany, so maybe you can convince some brunette friends to join you?
