Flocktails Rd. IV: Pear-Shaped Ginger

Pears, like apples, are a perfect fall and winter fruit. They're one of the few produce items that you don't have to pay $10 per pound for because the season is so late. This little lady is a simple cocktail using pear juice, ginger vanilla simple syrup, ginger ale and L'etoile Du Nord vodka. I made it as a brunch cocktail because if you add juice to booze it immediately makes it appropriate for breakfast. The beautiful accompanying doughnut is the Peek-a-boo Tres Leches from Glam Doll Donuts.

The Pear-Shaped Ginger

Start by making the simple syrup. In a small saucepan combine:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup ginger, peeled and chopped
  • 2 vanilla beans, split and scraped

Boil ingredients for one minute, remove from heat and let cool for 20 minutes. Run through a strainer to catch the ginger pieces and vanilla beans.

That's really the most tedious part of this super easy cocktail. When your simple syrup is cool get a glass ready and combine:

  • Ice
  • 2 oz. L'etoile Du Nord vodka
  • 1/2 oz. ginger vanilla simple syrup
  • 1/2 cup pear juice (I juiced my pears at home, but you could also buy pear juice)
  • Splash ginger ale

I added a bit of pear puree leftover from juicing the pears as well to give the cocktail a bit of pulp. That's it!
